Al-Zubya (The Pit Trap)

Al-Zubya refers to the pit trap dug by the Meccan polytheist army during the Battle of Uhud. It is located on the northern side of the Martyrs’ Cemetery, approximately 200 meters away.

The polytheist forces had dug a pit into the ground and concealed it with straw. The Prophet’s ﷺ mount fell into it, causing him to injure his lower lip and break a tooth. ‘Utbah ibn Abi Waqqas, ‘Abdallah ibn Qami’ah, and Ibn Shihab all struck the Prophet ﷺ during this moment. The companions ‘Ali and Talhah then rushed over to lift him out of the pit.

Al-Bukhari reports that the companion Sahl ibn Sa‘d al-Sa‘idi narrated: "When the Prophet’s ﷺ helmet was smashed on his head, his face was bleeding, and his tooth was broken, ‘Ali washed the blood from his face while Fatimah poured the water. When Fatimah saw that the bleeding increased, she took a piece of a straw mat, burned it, and applied the ashes to the wound until the bleeding stopped."

Al-Zubya lies along the path between the second and third phases of the battle.
