The Main Minaret of the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ

The main minaret of the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ is the south-eastern minaret. During the restoration works carried out at the Prophet’s Mosque ﷺ under Sultan Qaitbay, a crack was discovered in the main minaret. The Sultan therefore ordered its demolition and reconstruction, which took place on three occasions, in the years 886, 888, and 892 AH. Its foundations were reinforced with basalt.

Today, the minaret stands approximately 60 metres high. The main minaret has a door located near the door of the apartment of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This door had remained closed for around forty years before being reopened recently, upon completion of the restoration works, on the first day of Eid al-Fitr, Thursday, 1 Shawwal 1442 AH.
